Gamma knife radiosurgery for Cushing's disease and Nelson's syndrome

Marek J, et al. – Researchers from the Czech Republic present their 18–year experience in treating adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secreting adenomas (Cushing’s disease and Nelson’s syndrome) using the Leksell gamma knife (LGK) irradiation. They concluded that LGK radiation represents an effective and well–tolerated option for the treatment of patients with Cushing’s disease after unsuccessful surgery and may be a vialbe primary treatment in patients not suitable for, or who refuse surgery. In almost all patients with Nelson’s syndrome, this approach may impede tumorous growth and control the size of the adenoma.
